FoodINC Reflection

1. After watching Food Inc, what are your impressions of how science of food industry, technology of food industry, and society are interrelated?

I think that food industry, its’ technology and society are connected as the following:
First come a lot of hungry consumers which don’t have enough time to make and eat healthy, not so good looking food. -Is it going to be so tasty without all those chemicals that will be added by the food industry??? No!
Then comes the food industry, which gives the animal, for instance a cow, the fat food to make it better and tastier for us. In the first place, the saddest thing to me, the death of the animal, but certainly it starts off with a circle of an endless production, which should be faster, cheaper, and with a lot additives and chemicals… that’s the time when factories start making the product or packaging for the animal meat to be put in. We, the consumers buy that fat, tasty looking animal to eat at home. We gain the animals fats because we have eaten their meat, so we full-fill our fats, right?
Thirdly, there is one more problem: we also gain all those chemicals from animal meat, and we are not aware of all the consequences on our health while we enjoy in eating the genetically tastiest food ever!

2. How did the film describe science & technology as a positive or negative impact on society or the environment?

In my opinion, science and technology are described to have a negative impact both on society and the environment. Factories have fewer workers involved because the machines do everything by themselves; however they also can create a huge amount of carbon dioxide and other pollutants which harm the environment. But factories are built to full-fill the needs of the hungry, fast rising human population and so that’s why they are necessary to exist but their technologies are sometimes bad for consumers, because we can intake things that are genetically modified which is not healthy because who know what kind of chemicals they include. Take a hamburger from McDonalds. It is not healthy, doesn’t have any nutrients, and is genetically modified so it is not real at all but it looks and tastes really great!

3. How do our consumer choices affect what is out on the market and therefore, our own species survival?

Consumer choices are not often very smart, but we should really be aware of what we are taking inside of our bodies because our healthy choices will affect our own survival. My mother was retelling a movie to me which is created by a man who had eaten only McDonalds for a month, and at the end of that month, he was much heavier and fatter, exhausted and with a lot of disease that can just a person have who is for example chronically sick. (That is the reason why she doesn’t allow me to go to McDonalds.) So, the point is that we should be very careful when buying and eating something, however, marketing, I admit, is a miracle! We care mostly about taste, and less about health; we, as consumers look at how, or if the food package is nicely decorated, and attractive to us. Also, we look at TV commercials which are also suited in the technology group. But, if we stop buying products, they will not be out in the market anymore because it is a waste of the producers’ time and money to make it. So we should try to raise our own awareness of what we want to eat, and that will direct industry to make healthier products.

4. How are we as humans connected to how the Earth is used?

Humans have mainly caused problems on the Earth, because they are on the top of food chain, the most intelligent mammals, but the ones that don’t use the Earth just to survive, more to enjoy and obstruct. We caused a lot of disturbance using much more spaces and resources than we really need, also in not recycling, polluting waters, airs, causing global warming etc. we kill mammals and animals to get our food, we cut down trees to get materials such as paper, cardboard and so on. We have done a VARIETY of things to our Earth, and the only way we can change this is by caring, and respecting the environment around us. For instance, we can buy food cans, we can recycle the things that are recyclable, we don’t need to pollute the waters by throwing poisonous trash in there and harming the air by causing climate change with gases coming out of our roof, we have to respect everything around us, because everything around us is ideally our environment and our society. We can help.

5. A few ideas that popped up in conversation throughout the movie were:

When do we say "no" to more high tech devices and go back to what caused the problem in the first place? Why are we only into the "HOW" things work and not the "WHY" things don't? What did this farmer mean?

The questions that the farmer has asked are to me very suspicious. In my opinion, people think that they cannot help, and that they cannot do anything to make our environment a better place, because they think that others don’t care, so why waste their time. But they are wrong, every little piece they waste is trouble for the WHOLE Earth. That is a big problem, and that really affects the Earth. The other possible reason is because it can be expensive for them so they don’t want to waste time and money on that. Anyways, back to what I was talking about, humans think that they cannot help, so they make up things that are already possible for them to do, just talk about how things work, and leave out the why because they don’t want to waste time learning more .

6. What is the difference between natural farming and industrial farming? Which is better? Are they both necessary for human survival? Why or why not?

Natural farming is much better and causes non-use of technology. The difference between those two things is that natural farming is when farmers use their own hands to pick up food and vegetables, it involves less industry, less chemicals, but also less resources obtained, ex. less food, or meat. In opposite, the industrial farming is when people use technology to do the work for them, it includes big land spaces, machines and chemicals, but all these things should be very controlled, for me, it looks more as “allegedly”. Natural farming is better because it includes clean and not genetically modified, but it cannot give enough food for all people on the Earth, that’s why industrial farming is also necessary!

7. If technology and industry have improved so much that we are getting faster, fatter, bigger, and cheaper, how are science and technology held responsible for improving or ruining human health and survival?

Human health and survival depend on a lot of things. First of all, space and nutrients! They both should be healthy, but, unfortunately, they are not, because everything is getting faster, fatter, bigger, cheaper and less healthy for sure. So the more fats from an animal we gain, the worse it is for us. I would say that technology makes some kind of fake food for us, and it can ruin our health. This also goes to animals. Animals that eat that kind of food are poisoned. Then when we eat the animal, we get poisoned too. So it is a problem anyhow!

8. What economic costs, environmental costs, ethical costs, health costs, and cultural costs did you observe while watching the film?

Everything costs, but the human health most-for example if u are sick, you can’t go to work, you can’t earn money, and you have to pay insurance, medicaments etc. So you waste a lot of money by getting healthier, instead of just keeping your good food choice. The ethical cost can be seen by the unfair choices that are offered by factory owners-buying cheap and tasty, no matter if it’s not healthy. Environmental costs are also obvious, spreading diseases, pollution, occupying spaces etc.

9. Finally, state your final thoughts about this film and any changes you see happening in the food industry in the future or even your own eating habits.

I think that this movie stated the right facts, and everything was very well said. I agree with most of the things, and I learned, well not learned, but figured out why my mom was so against eating my favorite McDonalds meal-now I have much more understanding and facts that I can tell her to support her.

Owl Pellet Chart

OWL LAB
In the past few days (actually a long time ago) our class has been working on investigating owl pellets. In the beginning, we started separating their bones in its' suitable position, and then moved on to finding out which animal was what. (Example: Rat, vole etc...) Finally, when we've done that, we moved on to seeing the total number of groups and classes. As you can see above, I made a pie chart describing the percentages of the pellets with the help of my group.

Ultimate Survival Unit Reflection

1. Reflect on what has helped you in understanding the "big idea" of the unit.
(Big Idea: Students will understand the use and management of natural resources, the transformation of resources into human capital, goods, tools and machines as well as sustainable development of human society to maintain the delicate balance between man and the natural environment.)

The big idea of the unit was learning about combining man life and the natural environment to get the result of ultimate survival. The fact that helped me understand the big idea of this unit is the difference between what we do, and how we are able to decrease the goodness of a natural environment. Also, when people are getting paper and other products from trees, they decrease biodiversity by harming trees- resulting in any bad things such as loss of the species' homes, reducing amounts of oxygen and the increasment of carbon dioxide....
The things that helped me understand this main "big" idea of the unit, is: movies that we watched, articles that I read for current events in order for better understanding the relations between the facts, and finally the project about packaging that we did at the end- it made me think about the necessities of using and wasting resources.

2. Reflect on the unit question (What is a necessity and how does an organism ensure survival of its species within its environment?) and how it relates to the unit title: Ultimate Survival.

A necessity is something that a species really needs in order to survive. For example, a long time ago when we did the plants labs, that organism needed space, grow and reproduce, needed water and nutrients etc... This also goes for other species.
And organism for instance catches another organism which ensures its' survival because it can feed itself by its' prey. It relates to the title: Ultimate Survival because the organism I was just talking about saved itself. But, ultimate survival also is connected with human species, but in a negative order- is not doing things just to survive, but is doing more things in order to enjoy and full-fill others, not basic things and needs. That is why man harms the environment and that leads to ultimate fights of other species in order to survive.

3. How did the unit question allow us to view survival through The Area of Interaction: Environments:(FOR EXAMPLE: The effects of one environment on another, the roles our environments play in the lives and well-being of humankind, and the effects of our actions, attitudes and constructs, such as sustainable development and conservation.)

The areas of interactions of one environment species onto another environment species are overlapping. That means that one species has strong connections and influences onto another and that relation can be the: Prey or predator, symbiosis or parasitism.... It also shows the actions that humans are doing in order to repair what they did by harming the environment such as the biodiversity conservation.

4. What would you have liked to do more of? Less of?

In my opinion, this project went really great, and we covered a lot of things about this unit. However, I would have done less of the lab report about plants. It was pointless because one of the plants kept dying, and the point of the experiment was for them to be able to survive in a closed ecosystem, but it was my partner and I who made a mistake- we added much more water than it needed so I learned that too much is sometimes bad. I would like to do more of practical projects because I really enjoyed this packaging project we did a couple of days ago, but do less of current events (NO OFFENSE MRS.M!) because I really didn't have enough time to do them at the time I should have done them.

5. In your point of view, how well did we investigate the unit question, concept, and area of interaction? Include this in your reflection as well and give specific examples to support your opinions.

I think that we perfectly covered the unit question because we were studying about everything that supports the unit question; "Ultimate Survival." But I also think that we should work on this much more than in one unit only. This is because I realized how the relationship between all the parts of one ecosystem are complicated and how big and bad the influence of us, humans in an environment can be. I also think that we should have more understanding in environmental things such as the sustainable development. There are a lot of biodiversity conservations, human footprints, and all these things are very interesting and helpful in order to survive.

Green Plastics

Bioplastic is developed as more environmentally friendly plastic and it is called bio because it is made up of sugarcane, corn etc... It is developed because scientists wanted to make plastic that is less harmful for the environment than classical plastic make up of polymers created in Factories.
What their plastic makes green is the idea that it is more environmentally friendly than plastic that we are using. It is created out of corn- and not from crude oil like classic plastic so it saves resources, but it still needs energy/electricity to be produced. It is also "green" because it uses renuable sources such as corn.

Some of the issues with plastic that are mentioned are how plastic is made by the process of polymerization (which is the condensation of monomers to get polymers.) These monomers are obtained from crude oil and that leads to pollution. Further on, it describes how natural monomers are obtained from natural sources (corn or sugarcane) - One of theses natural monomers is Lactic acid and how they are combined to make bioplastic. These bioplastics can be used for different objects we use, such as plastic knives, and even clothes! It then describes how this bioplastic can anyhow harm the environment by using pestisides' lands that can be use for food production. The production of corn can also pollute the water and air, by releasing fertilizers in water or carbon dioxide in the air. It can also affect the coming of food crisis because the land is used for corn and bioplastic but nor for food production! The scientists that is talking in this video also tells us the way that this plastic can be decomposed in decomposers called composters, however, it also mentions that this is not a happy solution because it releases carbon dioxide. It cannot be recycled with other plastics because the process of production is different.

So the question is: IS THE USE OF THIS BIOPLASTIC REALLY GREEN OT IS IT JUST A NICE TRY TO MINIMIZE THE NEGATIVE THINGS WE DO WITH CLASSIC PLASTIC? In my opinion, it is good to be developed but it should also be much more recycled and not thrown away as a waste product. I also think that scientists should work further to make it much greener. For example make the electricity production by solar power or wind power!!!

I believe that this green plastic can change our packaging package in order to develop the sense on how recycling and green products are important. For example, I can use the same plastic bag more times and not to throw it away immediately.

Thoughts about the Packaging project

I thought the packaging project went really well for several reasons. Firstly, because it was really easy and I got to learn some fantastic things to help me choose what to buy in the future. I learnt that I should buy products from a person who actually cares about recycling and waste products, because buying paper, for instance, from a producer that doesn't care, will only do worse for the environment. Secondly, I loved the fact that we had to take apart pieces from our packaging product and tape it to our poster, then explain each part of the package and make a brief summary if it is necessary, attractive and recyclable. Thirdly, having a chance to work on this in class is a great help, because it wastes less of our working time at home and we get to decorate our poster there, however in class we search for information about the product.
In conclusion, this project was very enjoyable, interesting and easy going for young learners like us. :)

Packaging Reflection

1. Research the company that makes the product you chose. (Environmental action?)

The company that makes the product I’ve chosen is Ferrero, a private Italian confectionery company that was established in a small town called Alba in the north of Italy in 1944. After the second world war, this company became a leadership in candy manufacturing in Italy and from 1956, it has started with the spreading all over the world (for example the first factory out of Italy was opened in Germany in 1956).Now it has its’ factories all over the world and it is a company who’s brands are known in almost every part of the world like Nutella, Kinder Bueno, Kinder Surprise, Ferrero Rocher etc…
This company is strongly committed to use environmentally-friendly methods in every part of its’ company all over the world. This includes:
•The organization of the projects and programs that respect the environment in all the fields that company operates in;
•The management of their factories by using the resources (energy, water and materials) in an efficient manner,
•Reducing the environmental impact of their actions,
•Reducing waste and refuse,
•Using renewable energy sources where possible,
•Responsible management of water resources…

2.What improvements are they making to become more ecological friendly?

In the previous paragraph, I wrote all the things that they are doing to become more ecologically friendly. They have also introduced ISO 14001 that is environmentally management system which continuously examines environmental actions and responsibility (for example; what is the emission of air pollution, and what should be done to reduce it, what improvements are done, etc.) They also try to use renewable sources of energy where it is possible, an they are working continuously on education of their employees of the environmental practice.

3.Write a letter to this company to discuss your project and make recommendation to then about improving their product packaging.

Dear all,
I am delighted with your Ferrero candies- they are so super delicious! There is nothing I would change about your candies, but since my science project was to examine the packaging, I would write a few things that would be my recommendation to improving your packaging. Since people don’t usually look at the back of the package, instead they want to only see how it looks like, I suggest you put more information on the front and less at the back of your packaging. Also, I am wondering was it necessary to put the paper cups in all 24 candies since we already have aluminum foils that protect them and golden plastic holders for them?
I also wanted to say that I enjoy your products almost every day, and thank you for the quality and taste that makes me zest all the time.
Best regards, Jovana 7A ISB.

4.Supply and demand?
What is our responsibility as a consumer?

Our responsibility would be to try to recycle everything that is possible, but also to keep the remains for something else, like my mom can use this transparent plastic holder, as a holder for her candy recipes. If we cannot recycle them by ourselves, we can separate them and bring to the recyclable station, if this station exists in Serbia. (but unfortunately doesn’t) We can as a consumer buy the products of the companies that have ecological and social responsibilities (for example if we know that some companies don’t care about pollution, we should not buy their products)
