Packaging Reflection

1. Research the company that makes the product you chose. (Environmental action?)

The company that makes the product I’ve chosen is Ferrero, a private Italian confectionery company that was established in a small town called Alba in the north of Italy in 1944. After the second world war, this company became a leadership in candy manufacturing in Italy and from 1956, it has started with the spreading all over the world (for example the first factory out of Italy was opened in Germany in 1956).Now it has its’ factories all over the world and it is a company who’s brands are known in almost every part of the world like Nutella, Kinder Bueno, Kinder Surprise, Ferrero Rocher etc…
This company is strongly committed to use environmentally-friendly methods in every part of its’ company all over the world. This includes:
•The organization of the projects and programs that respect the environment in all the fields that company operates in;
•The management of their factories by using the resources (energy, water and materials) in an efficient manner,
•Reducing the environmental impact of their actions,
•Reducing waste and refuse,
•Using renewable energy sources where possible,
•Responsible management of water resources…

2.What improvements are they making to become more ecological friendly?

In the previous paragraph, I wrote all the things that they are doing to become more ecologically friendly. They have also introduced ISO 14001 that is environmentally management system which continuously examines environmental actions and responsibility (for example; what is the emission of air pollution, and what should be done to reduce it, what improvements are done, etc.) They also try to use renewable sources of energy where it is possible, an they are working continuously on education of their employees of the environmental practice.

3.Write a letter to this company to discuss your project and make recommendation to then about improving their product packaging.

Dear all,
I am delighted with your Ferrero candies- they are so super delicious! There is nothing I would change about your candies, but since my science project was to examine the packaging, I would write a few things that would be my recommendation to improving your packaging. Since people don’t usually look at the back of the package, instead they want to only see how it looks like, I suggest you put more information on the front and less at the back of your packaging. Also, I am wondering was it necessary to put the paper cups in all 24 candies since we already have aluminum foils that protect them and golden plastic holders for them?
I also wanted to say that I enjoy your products almost every day, and thank you for the quality and taste that makes me zest all the time.

4.Supply and demand?
What is our responsibility as a consumer?

Our responsibility would be to try to recycle everything that is possible, but also to keep the remains for something else, like my mom can use this transparent plastic holder, as a holder for her candy recipes. If we cannot recycle them by ourselves, we can separate them and bring to the recyclable station, if this station exists in Serbia. (but unfortunately doesn’t) We can as a consumer buy the products of the companies that have ecological and social responsibilities (for example if we know that some companies don’t care about pollution, we should not buy their products)
